What is Counselling?
Counselling is a therapeutic process with a professionally trained and objective individual. It can take many different forms, but has the goal of collaboratively working with clients in a safe and confidential environment to promote mental health and wellbeing, enhance self-understanding, address specific concerns and work on client-led goals. Clients are active participants in the counselling process. Counselling sessions are focused on empowering clients to make positive changes in their lives. Counsellors do not make diagnoses, but instead walk alongside clients to improve areas of their life which are not functioning well for them. Counsellors use a variety of talk-based therapies and evidence-based interventions to facilitate change and empower clients. The counselling relationship is built on empathy, deep listening, and a non-judgmental approach, allowing clients to explore various aspects of their lives, gain new perspectives, develop problem-solving skills, and achieve their desired outcomes and goals. I work in an integrative way, with a deep emphasis on understanding client needs, encouraging their existing strengths and warm, positive collaboration, with practical strategies to help clients move towards their goals.
What to expect
What does a counselling consult entail?
Although counselling consults may look a little different every time you visit, a first visit typically involves relationship building and understanding your reasons for coming to therapy, along with some discussion of your history and aspects of confidentiality. It is important for both counsellor and client to feel they are a good fit, and referrals can be made if needed. Subsequent sessions focus on the letting the “real” therapeutic work begin. This includes building trust, addressing past issues, and developing coping strategies. I aim to patiently walk alongside you while you find your strengths and work through things that have hurt you. Because clients come to counselling for a variety of reasons, from trauma to life skills, sessions are flexible based on changing needs. In most sessions I will usually ask something like “What feels important for you to discuss today?” – as often what clients book in for can change by the time they get to session with me. I aim to be flexible while still frequently checking back to your original reasons and goals for coming to counselling. The goal is to empower clients to cope independently, leading to a natural conclusion of the therapeutic relationship. Sessions may end with a check-in, particularly if there has been significant unburdening, to ensure my clients feel grounded and safe, and I like to emphasise gentle self-care strategies for the remainder of the day .
